ITAHARI, Aug 19: Eight families have been relocated to safer areas after continuous erosion by the western channel of the Saptakoshi River, with another 14 families set to be moved soon.
Settlements in wards 6 and 9 of Barahakshetra Municipality in Sunsari, as well as three wards of Belaka Municipality in Udayapur, are at high risk due to the ongoing river erosion.
Eight villages at high risk of Seti River erosion
Barahakshetra Mayor Ramesh Karki said eight families have so far been relocated to government-owned ailani land.
“Another 14 families have their own land to the west of the area currently being eroded, so we plan to relocate them there,” Mayor Karki said. “Although 22 families will be relocated immediately. Many more houses in other settlements remain at risk as the erosion has not stopped. They will be relocated if needed.”
The same area experienced river erosion three years ago, when around 30–35 households were forced to move westward.
