KATHMANDU, Aug 14: The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee has urged lawmakers and invited officials to maintain dignity and use respectful language during committee meetings.

Committee Chairperson Samikchya Baskota issued the ruling during Friday’s meeting following remarks made by Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker Khagendra Sunar a few days ago concerning an alleged theft at the residence of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki.

Sunar had said that the alleged theft at Karki’s residence had not been made public. He said that if the incident had actually occurred, it should be brought before the committee for further investigation.

Following Sunar’s remarks, Karki urged lawmakers to respect the Nepal Police and refrain from using undignified language. He also asked lawmakers not to make unsubstantiated allegations of corruption and bribery against police officials.

Baskota said the language, words and conduct used in committee meetings are closely watched by the public, particularly because the meetings often bring together senior officials heading ministries, government agencies and various organizations.

“As the people we invite to the committee are heads of various organizations, ministries and agencies, the language we use, the words we choose and our conduct are all being observed by the general public,” she said.

She also urged lawmakers and invited officials to stay focused on the agenda and exercise caution and sensitivity in the language they use while raising issues.

Minister for Home Affairs Sudan Gurung, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam and IGP Karki, among others, were present at the meeting.
