KATHMANDU, July 27: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Kamala Pant has demanded that Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Prem Kumar Rai, be impeached.

Speaking at the National Assembly on Sunday, Pant said the country’s core problem lies in the absence of good governance, which has allowed corruption and irregularities to thrive. She expressed concern that public trust in the major state organs is rapidly declining.

Pant highlighted a growing crisis of trust not only among political parties but also between service providers and the public. “There is no credibility left in the system. A culture of distrust is spreading, and it is said that even under-the-table dealings are becoming common,” she said.

She further questioned whether the cabinet will speak out against ministers allegedly involved in bribery scandals, noting that such ministers are still walking freely despite their involvement.

Pant’s impeachment demand comes after the Special Court questioned the CIAA’s decision not to prosecute Rai in the controversial procurement of two wide-body aircraft — a case in which he was reportedly involved in the decision-making process.
