KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party (PP) leader in Madhesh Provincial Assembly Krishna Prasad Yadav has been appointed Chief Minister of Madhesh Province. He was sworn in by the Province Chief, Dr Surendra Labh, in accordance with Article 168 (2) of the Constitution.
Yadav assumes office with the support of a seven-party coalition, securing backing from 77 lawmakers representing the NC, JSP Nepal, Janamat Party, the former CPN-Maoist Centre, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) and the now-dissolved CPN (Unified Socialist).

His appointment follows the resignation of CPN-UML Parliamentary Party leader Saroj Kumar Yadav on December 3. Saroj had been Chief Minister as the leader of the largest party under Article 168 (3) of the Constitution. Following his resignation, the office of the Province Chief called for the formation of a new government under Clause 2.
Earlier, on the night of November 9, Krishna Prasad Yadav of the UML had been appointed Chief Minister under Article 168 (3), prompting the seven-party coalition to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court. Hearing three related petitions, the Supreme Court on December 1 ordered the then government to seek a vote of confidence within 24 hours and, if unable to do so, to form a new government under Article 168 (2).
