Old vs new among Maoist leaders

KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Besides sharp ideological disputes, the Maoist CC on Tuesday also saw serious accusations and counter-accusations being traded between old party leaders and new ones.

The new entrants seriously objected to being dubbed "Chaite (opportunistic) Maoists" by the old guard and demanded investigation and action against them.[break]

"There is a tendency to term some leaders Chaite Maoists. The party must investigate who the Chaite Maoists are, and why they are being so termed" said CC leader Prakash Pokharel who joined the UCPN (Maoist) after his party, Unity Centre, merged with then CPN (Maoist) some two years back.

According to him, many Maoist leaders had termed the new entrants Chaite. In the Maoist party, the term denotes new entrants who joined the party for "vested interests and personal aggrandizement".

Similarly, when CC leader Mahendra Paswan stated that "the morally corrupt including pickpockets" have joined the party in the Tarai region, some leaders mainly from the former Unity Center took strong exception.

The leaders from the Unity Center construed the term "pickpocket" as directed at them.

Ram Kumar Sharma, Anjana Bishankhe and Ram Rijhan Yadav said they had joined the Maoist party to complete the revolution, not to earn a living through pick-pocketing.

Demand for inclusion

During the meeting, leaders from Madhes and the far-west stated that they are under-represented in the CC and politburo and demanded that the leadership revamp the structure of the party apex bodies to include the marginalized.

Yadav, Sharma and Prabhu Shah said the party is yet to understand the pain of being Madhesi. "When we demand inclusion of Madhesis, others immediately bring up the issue of other marginalized groups including women and dalits," said Sharma, adding that this is a ploy to exclude Madhesis.

Similarly, Yadav said that the party has always neglected the Madhesi demand for inclusion and this neglect may arouse negative feelings in the Tarai region.

Similarly, Om Prakash Pun demanded that the party induct two leaders from the far west into the CC and two into the party´s advisory board.

Extension of CC

During the meeting, some leaders argued for the extension of the CC, while others were against it. Some said the party apex bodies should be expanded for social inclusion, but other said it should be done on the basis of individual capabilities.

´It´s not good to expand the party on the basis of inclusion in terms of gender, religion and region," said Jaya Puri Gharti Magar, adding that the new members should be inducted on the basis of their capabilities.
