KATHMANDU, May 3: World Press Freedom Day is being marked today in Nepal with various programs. President Ramchandra Paudel has extended his best wishes on the occasion.
Mr Speaker, Either Prove or Apologize!
In his message, President Paudel wished for continued success for the Nepali media sector in exercising and safeguarding the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and in fearlessly delivering truthful information to the public.
Extending greetings to all journalists at home and abroad, as well as Nepali brothers and sisters, on World Press Freedom Day (May 3, 2026), he stressed the need to focus on discovering truth through independent journalism and disseminating facts to establish accuracy in society.
The President noted that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and that the media has played a vital role in various democratic movements. He said press freedom is equally important for implementing citizens’ constitutional right to be informed, adding that the more impartial, independent, and strong the press is, the stronger democracy becomes.
President Paudel stated that ensuring press freedom also requires creating a safe environment for journalists to carry out their work. The Constitution guarantees full freedom of the press and expression, and journalists should be able to engage freely and without obstruction in the entire process from gathering information to disseminating news, ensuring that the voices of all classes and communities are heard.
He also pointed out the growing challenge posed by the increasing use of social media, where false and misleading information can confuse citizens and weaken existing systems. Expressing hope, President Paudel said the day would inspire and energize the Nepali media to confront such challenges and continue providing truthful, factual, and reliable information to the public.
