After the incident, the examination centre turned tense, disrupting the exams for around 10 minutes.
The sixth day of the SLC exams started 10 minutes later than scheduled as all the examinees at the centre refused to take the examination, in protest against the slapping.
“After the police officer started slapping Nelu, the other students turned aggressive,” admitted one SLC examinee.
Jha told Republica that the lady police officer slapped her even though she was doing what she was told and taking out the books she carried. “When she (police officer) tried to take the books from my person, I told her I would take them out by myself. We had a minor dispute. Then, all of a sudden, she started slapping me,” she said.
She was reportedly slapped five or six times. She said a male policeman on duty saved her from further slappings.
The examination resumed later after the superintendent of the examination centre and police and Armed Police Force personnel vowed to take action against the wrongdoer. “The students sat for the exam after we promised to punish the police officer,” said Ram Bilash Kamati, superintended of the examination centre.
In view of the incident, the examination, which was to conclude at 10:15 a.m., concluded at 10:25 a.m.instead, informed Kamati.
Likewise, Ram Kumar Yadav, policeman in-charge at the examination centre, said, “The lady police officer slapped Nelu after the latter chided her during the search.”
Admitting that the police officer had erred, SP Sanjay Singh Basnet, chief of District Police Office in Saptari, said she would face departmental action.
