SPORTS BRIEFS: DPS win team championship

KATHMANDU, Jan 4: Delhi Public School (DPS), Biratnagar won 11 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze medals to claim the team champions´ title in the First Regional Lions Club School-level Sports that concluded on their home ground on Tuesday.



However, they were thrashed 6-0 in the football final by Don Bosco, Biratnagar. Hira Mani Gautam scored a hat-trick in the match.[break]



SOS School, Itahari finished second with 6 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronzes. Don Bosco secured the third spot with 4 golds, 7 silvers and 4 bronzes in the three-day event.



SOS clinched gold in the boys´ basketball on the final day. The title of girls´ 100m race went to Jyotsna Rauniyar of DPS. Likewise, Laxmi Katuwal of Pokhariya School won gold in the girls´ 200m race. In the boys´ category, Saif Ali Khan of DPS won gold in both the 100m and 200m races. Naresh Yadav won the boys´ chess title. DPS won the table tennis team event, while Megha KC and Karan Rai of DPS won the titles in the girls´ and boys´ singles categories, respectively.



Gyanu Baba triumph



Defending champions Gyanu Baba School secured victories in two matches during the Sixth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball on Tuesday. In the first match of the day, Gyanu Baba eased past Chandeshwori 25-1, 25-3, 25-3. Aruna Shahi of Gyanu Baba was adjudged the woman of the match. They also defeated MMC Kaski 25-5, 25-14, 25-17. Tops School were a set down but bounced back to defeat New Diamond Academy 22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-23. New Diamond, who were relying on underage children in the open tournament, brought two new players from Pokhara on the fourth day.



However, coach Kumar Rai said the new players could not adjust in the setting and they lost the match. “We brought elder players because our main player was finding it difficult to strike. But the team is still not set properly,” said the coach, whose team comprising players as young as ten year-olds were showing perfect coordination but lacked strength. The decision to include new players paid off as New Diamond defeated Chandeshwori 25-16, 25-12, 25-11 in their next match. It was New Diamond´s first victory while Chandeshwori are yet to win their match.



Mahato´s ton seals victory for Parsa



Parsa defeated Bhaktapur by 128 runs on Tuesday in the group-stage match of the Madhyamanchal Inter District Cricket Tournament organized by District Sports Development Committee, Mahottari. Parsa, electing to bat first, were allout for 264 runs in 39.2 overs at the Mahottari Cricket Ground. Man of the match Suraj Mahato scored 116 runs off 101 balls before getting out in Dilsan Katiwada´s bowling. Irshad Ahmad (38 runs) and Dipencra Shah (20 runs) were the other two contributors.



Praveen Joshi took three wickets for Bhaktapur while Khatiwada, Raju Pulami and Ajay Paudel claimed two wickets each. In reply, Bhaktapur were all out for 136 runs in 30.3 overs. Praveen Joshi scored 68 runs but rest of the batsmen failed to stay in the crease. Navin Yadav and Rajiv Kumar Shrestha took three wickets each while Vijay Gupta and Nafiz Shekha claimed two wickets each.
