The members of NSC Workers´ Union, who had been protesting for three days, brought the daily activity of NSC to a standstill accusing the NSC officials of ignoring their demands. [break]
The agitating staff had set a deadline on Monday for the officials to release their salary by Wednesday. Before the pen-down, the staff had staged a sit-in in front of the office of the NSC member secretary.
During a corner meeting that followed, the members of the union accused the NSC leadership of aiding corruption. General Secretary of the union Phanindra Poudel slammed the officials for showing irresponsible behavior and said one of the reasons for the agitation was that NSC member Samim Miyan Ansari had threatened to take physical action against them.
MMC upset APF in semifinal
Star-studded Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) secured a place in the final of the Adarsh Cup Football Tournament being held in Lekhnath, Pokhara after a hard-fought sudden death win over Armed Police Force (APF) on Wednesday.
The finalists were decided by sudden death penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw in the regulation and added time and a 3-3 tie in the tie-breaker. Krishna Lama missed the first spot-kick of the sudden death for APF while Ganesh Khadka converted his penalty. Santosh Sahukhala, Tashi Tshering, and Deepak Bhusal scored for MMC in the tie-breaker while Sangit Rai and Sujal Shrestha were denied by goalie Samit Rajbhandari. Similarly, Sudip Shrestha, Nirajan Malla and Amir Shrestha succeeded for APF, while Ganesh Lawati and Saurabh Shrestha missed their shots.
Earlier, APF had taken an early third minute lead through Lawati but MMC equalized in the 80th minute when their skipper Tashi Tshering sent the ball past the net.
Gurung regains lead
Kamal Gurung regained the lead in the First Open Tara Running Shield Archery Tournament on Wednesday. Gurung, who was also adjudged the best player of the day, scored two points to take his tally to 10 points. Govinda Chhantyal had to settle for the second position with nine points after he failed to score any point on the sixth day of the tournament. Kumar Paija is trailing in the third spot with eight points. In the team event that began on Wednesday, Myagdi Magar Samaj ´A´ are ahead with 93 points.
Rai, Shrestha´s pair into pre-quarters
Ram Rai and Bimal Shrestha, the national champions in men´s doubles, on Wednesday made it through to the pre-quarterfinal stage in the doubles badminton organized under a monthlong sports festival by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy. The duo enjoyed a bye in the second round as well after gaining a direct entry into the second round in the tie-sheet draw. They enjoyed a walkover from the pair of Bharat Lama and Tek Dahal.
In other doubles matches held at Nepal Police Club´s court at Bhrikutimandap, the pairs of Kishor Byanjankar and Suraj Maharjan, Dinesh Maharjan and Raju Maharjan, Akash Chhantyal and Mangal Gurung, Bhawani Angdengwe and Mani Kandangwa of MBM, and Ballav Maharjan and Ram Lama of APF entered the second round.
In the veterans´ doubles, Pushpa Tamrakar and Suresh Shrestha of APF, Rajesh Shrestha and Narayan Shakya of APF, Man Bista and Mani Kandangwa of MBM, Min Bahadur KC and Ramesh Kharel of NPC, and Hari Shrestha and Devendra Subba of APF also progressed to the second round winning their respective matches.
Yangal beat Rudramati
Yangal Club defeated Rudramati Club by 64 runs to keep their final´s hope alive in the Madan Bhandari Memorial T-20 Cricket Tournament. Yangal, slated in Group ´B´, has four points from three matches but Far Western Cricket Development Club lead the group with four points from two matches. Yangal, batting first, put up 180/4 in allotted 20 overs at the TU Cricket Ground. Subash Pradhan struck 77 runs off 55 balls while Thupten Lama scored 40 runs. In reply, Rudramati were all out for 116 in 19.5 overs. Prem Tamang scored 43 runs and tried to anchor the innings but failed. Ujjwal Thapa took three wickets for Yangal. In a meaningless match in Group ´A´ equation, New Vision Club defeated Baluwatar Club by three wickets. Baluwatar put up 120/3 in 20 overs and New Vision met the target in 19.4 overs losing seven wickets. Nepal APF Club have already qualified for the final from the group.
Maharjan wins gold in table tennis
Elina Maharjan of Morgan International College won the title in the girls´ U-18 category of the Open Tennis Tournament on Wednesday. She defeated her collegemate Renuka Khatri 11-2, 12-10, 11-6 in the title decider. In the boys´ U-18 category, Anish Shrestha of Morgan won the title defeating Binesh Khania of Prime. Krishna Thapa Magar of Nyatapol won the boys´ U-14 title while Pritam Awale of Prabhat finished second.
In the women´s open category, Nabita Shrestha of Nepal Police Club (NPC) defeated Elina Maharjan 11-13, 11-5, 11-7, 11-13, 11-6 in a best-of-seven match to set up a title clash with Renuka Khatri. Khatri defeated Shiksha Nembang of NPC 13-11, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8 in the semifinal. Shiva Sundar Gothe of Bhaktapur and Ajay Suwal of NPC made it to the final of the men´s open category.
The tournament is part of the sports festival organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy.
