The eight-day event organized by the Madan Bhandari Sports Academy on the occasion of the ongoing month-long sports festival will see the participation of eight teams, including the newly formed Armed Police Force Club packed with top ranking national players. [break]
Other teams registered for the tournament are Baluwatar Cricket Club, Boyz United Club, New Vision Club, Far Western Cricket Development Club, Yangal Club, KCC and Rudramati Club. The teams will be divided into two pools. Each pool will have four teams and will play league rounds with each other.
The winners of each pool will enter the final on December 31. The winners will bag a purse of Rs 40,000 and the runners-up will receive Rs 20,000 each.
Rana clinches title
Mayanka Rana clinched the U-10 girls´ singles title of the Ninth Jaykar Memorial National Tennis Tournament on Friday. Rana ousted Karuna Gauchan 9-5 in the title clash held at the Satdobato Tennis Complex.
In the U-10 boys´ singles, Samrakshyak Bhushan Bajracharya defeated Nabin Joshi in the final to secure the first position.
The winners in both the categories bagged a purse of Rs 5,000 while the runners-up received Rs 2,500 each.
Aslesha Lissanevitch won the title of the U-14 girls´ singles defeating Anushka Joshi 6-0, 6-2. Lissanevitch bagged Rs 14,000 while Joshi got Rs 7,500.
Swaraj KC saw off Pranab Khanal 10-8, 10-7 in the final to win the title of the U-9 boys´ singles.
Meanwhile, the title of the boys´ doubles in the open category went to the pair of Pranjal Kayastha and Milan Rokaya. The duo struggled past Anand Gauchan and Achal Thapa 7-6, 7-6 in the final.
In the U-12 girls´ singles, Mayanka Rana set up a title clash with Bibhuti Karki. Rana defeated Sachi Gurung 9-4 in the semifinal to secure the final berth. Likewise, Karki ousted Bijisha Shrestha 9-8 in the semifinal to advance into the final.
In the U-12 boys´ singles, Ivan Hoe Lissanevitch will take on Abhaya Gauchan in the title decider. Lissanevitch thrashed Bipin Thapa 9-2 while Gauchan squeezed past Pranab Kayastha 9-8 in the semifinals.
In the U-14 boys´ singles, Lissanevitch defeated Suyash Nahata 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinal to set up a title clash with Brahmanda Singh Moktan, who edged out Abhaya Gauchan 6-1, 6-3.
Reliance crash out
Defending champions Reliance International Academy crashed out of the Second BST Inter-college Basketball Tournament in the boys´ category on Friday. Morgan International ousted the holders Reliance 36-32 at the court of BST College, Gongabu to advance into the semifinal slated for Saturday. Morgan will face National Campus who ousted Golden Gate 48-26. Likewise, Bagmati set up a semifinal clash with VS Niketan. Bagmati saw off Whitehouse by a narrow margin of 52-49. VS Niketan beat Xavier International 47-28. In the girls´ category, NASA, Xavier International and Trinity made it to the semifinals winning their respective matches.
NASA in semifinals
NASA, Golden Gate, South Siders and Whitehouse reached the semifinals of the men´s category in the Second South Siders Open Basketball Tournament on Friday. NASA thrashed Golden Gate 84-50 as Rabin Khatri and Ravi Giri scored 21 points each for the winners. Golden Gate, riding on the 25 points scored by Joel Bartolli, edged past Asian College of Medical Science 85-42. Meanwhile, South Siders beat Snow Leopards 64-34 and Whitehouse defeated Unique Group, Kirtipur 94-71. Bikram Joshi topscored for Whitehouse with 29 points. In a match of women´s category, Nakhipot Youth Club beat Snow Leopard 33-20.
WMMC win Christmas Peace Cup
Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) clinched the title of the Hosanna Group First Christmas Peace Cup 2010 defeating NASA College 2-0 in the final match held at the ANFA Technical Centre, Chyasal on Friday. A first half goal from Rubin Shrestha and an injury time goal from Pankaj Lama helped WMMC win the match. WMMC took the lead in the 35th minute when Shrestha netted for the team. Lama scored in the 89th minute to seal the match beyond NASA´s reach. The winners bagged a purse of Rs 51,000 and the runners-up received Rs 31,000. While Shrestha was adjudged man of the match, WMMC goalkeeper Ranjit Gurung was declared the best player of the tournament. Chyasal Youth Club bagged the award for the best disciplined team. Former national skipper Mani Shah, chief guest during the closing day, gave away the prizes to the winners. Nepal Sports Journalist Forum President Niranjan Rajbanshi was the special guest at the program.
Kamal Gurung declared best archer
Kamal Gurung of Gurung Bamboo Archery Club scored two points to become the best archer in the inaugural day of the First Open Tara Running Shield Archery Tournament on Friday. Gurung bagged a purse of Rs 10,000 while another archer Gyanendra Sherchan bagged Rs 5,500. Purna Bahadur Gurung of the organizing committee said the best archers will bag cash prizes every day during the five-day event, which is being held on the occasion of Tamu Loshar. Pritam Garbuja of Myagdi Magar Samaj also scored two points in the event held at Sukhedhara. Sherchan, Purna Kumar Chhantyal and Chhepang Gurung scored one point each. Altogether 12 teams of the Gurung community are competing in the event.
