KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Amidst confusion over the monitoring mechanism after the departure of UNMIN on January 15, British ambassador John Tucknott has sought "clarification" from the government on the future of the peace process mechanism, including monitoring of the Nepal Army.

The British envoy asked the government for clarification about the mechanism at a meeting with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Thursday. During the meeting, he also discussed the peace process and the implications of UNMIN´s departure.[break]

He enquired about progress in the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants, and encouraged rapid agreement on a Nepali-led monitoring mechanism, according to a statement from the British embassy.

"Ambassador Tucknott urged the parties to resume sustained, serious negotiations that should be held in private," the embassy said.

The ambassador expressed hope that UNMIN´s departure on 15 January would mark the start of a new chapter where the Nepali parties take responsibility for completion of the peace process.

While expressing the UK government´s concerns, the ambassador also assured its continued engagement and support to Nepal in these challenging times.
