KATHMANDU, Dec 20: A joint initiative by UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and ILO (International Labor Organization) has transformed the lives of Bhutanese refugees and host communities in Koshi Province, enabling them to achieve self-reliance through vegetable farming.
According to a press release issued by ILO, the project, implemented by Mansarowar Agriculture Cooperative, has supported 150 farmers—68 refugees and 82 locals—with subsidized seeds, bio-fertilizers, training, and access to markets. Participants have reported significant profits, particularly in cucumber, spinach, and potato farming; boosting both income and mental well-being.

ILO Nepal Country Director Numan Özcan and UNHCR Representative Monique Sokhan visited the settlements in Beldangi and Pathari Sanischare to assess the project's impact, the press release stated. Sokhan praised the collaboration, saying, "Refugees' hard work and our joint efforts are driving sustainable livelihoods."
The initiative follows the AIMS model, which links refugees to viable market opportunities, fostering economic empowerment and resilience.
