KATHMANDU: After having been deceived time and again by the sugar mills and even by the government, sugarcane farmers from the southern Plains of Nepal have continued their protest in Kathmandu for the second consecutive year.

After having been tagged as ‘middlemen’ by the incumbent Industry Minister, Lekh Raj Bhatta, the farmers on Thursday fetched their ploughs along with sugarcane in a desperate bid to draw the attention of the government to address their demands.

Braving the dipping mercury in Kathmandu, the farmers have been organizing a sit-in protest in Maitighar, Kathmandu since last Sunday. They have presented two bottom lines --- either the government makes the sugar mills pay their debt or the government itself makes the payment in cash to them and charges the mills later -- so that they can call off their protest.

Here are some photos taken in the capital on Thursday.
