KATHMANDU, Sept 28: CPN-UML lawmaker Ain Mahar has accused the government of violating the rule of law and due process by arresting former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Monday, Mahar alleged that Rana was arrested in a “hooliganism- and abduction-style” manner, which he said amounted to an act of “state terror.”
Mahar said anyone who violates the law should be investigated, prosecuted and arrested on the basis of facts and evidence. However, he accused the government of intimidating and detaining people out of “prejudice and retaliation” against those who oppose it.

He also alleged that the government had harassed former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and UML Vice Chairman Bishnu Prasad Paudel.
“The government is humiliating citizens in ways that violate their dignity, individual rights and even human rights,” he said, condemning what he described as actions contrary to the rule of law.
Mahar also questioned Rana’s arrest over an alleged security threat linked to the Gen Z movement. He asked why the government had arrested the person said to be facing the threat instead of taking action against those allegedly posing it.
He demanded that the government identify those who had allegedly threatened Rana and take action against them if they were found responsible.
Mahar further accused the government of using Gen Z youths when it suited its interests and later attempting to discredit them.
