KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The Flood Forecasting Division has issued an emergency alert over a high risk of another major flood in the Bhotekoshi River, after a new lake formed when the river was blocked upstream.
According to satellite images received from the Chinese government through Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a preliminary technical analysis, a new lake has been formed at the same location where the catastrophic Bhotekoshi flood originated on Wednesday.

The division said the amount of water in the lake is continuously increasing, raising the risk of the natural dam breaking and triggering another devastating flash flood downstream.
In a special bulletin issued on Thursday afternoon, the division urged residents, travellers and rescue workers in downstream areas of the Bhotekoshi to immediately leave riverbanks and move to safer locations until further notice.
As the lake could breach any time, people living along riverbanks and rescue teams in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan have been urged to remain on high alert.
