KATHMANDU, April 1: The US State Department has lowered its travel advisory for Nepal to Level 2—“Exercise Increased Caution”—citing an improved security situation following the end of nationwide demonstrations that began in September 2025.

In an updated advisory issued on March 31, the Statement Department stated that while the protests have subsided and overall conditions are stable, the risk of sporadic demonstrations and localised unrest remains, particularly in urban areas. “Demonstrations can start with little warning and may quickly turn violent,” the advisory noted, urging travellers to avoid large crowds and follow instructions from local authorities.

The advisory also raised concerns over limited emergency and medical services in the country. While hospitals in Kathmandu are generally better equipped than those in other regions, they can be overcrowded, may lack essential medicines or equipment, and often require upfront payment before treatment. It added that the Government of Nepal does not cover medical costs for foreign nationals.

Travellers have been advised to carry necessary medications, obtain comprehensive travel health insurance—including coverage for medical evacuation—and be prepared to seek treatment abroad in case of serious illness or injury.

Highlighting environmental risks, the US warned that Nepal is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and landslides. The advisory noted that earthquakes can occur without warning, including in the Kathmandu Valley, while monsoon rains between June and September frequently trigger flash floods and landslides, disrupting transport and emergency response.

The State Department encouraged US citizens to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and allow embassy officials to make contact during emergencies. It also urged travellers to monitor local media, review country security information, and secure travel insurance before visiting Nepal.
