In what looks like a reversed picture of food crisis facing Karnali, the Jumla branch office of the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) has not been able to distribute even the last year´s stock of food grain. Yet, interestingly, the Nepalgunj regional office of NFC has increased the quota of food grain for Jumla this year. [break]
Last fiscal year, the Nepalgunj office of NFC had sent 29,000 quintals of food grain for Jumla. However, only 16,000 quintals was distributed that year. In the first six months of this fiscal year, of the total 13,000 quintals saved from last year, only 5,000 quintals have been sold out.
However, the NFC will transport 31,000 quintals -- 2,000 quintals more than last year -- for this fiscal year. Bhagwan Panta, the chief of the Nepalgunj regional office, says this year´s food grain could be used during upcoming rainy season. "I don´t know that the last year´s stock is still unused," he said.
However, Govinda Bahadur Shahi, Jumla district president of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), alleges that NFC officials NFC have deliberately decided to transport food grain to Jumla, though one third of the stock remains unused, to earn commission from local contractors.
