KATHMANDU, Oct 1: A total of 648 mountaineers from 69 countries have obtained permits to climb 20 different peaks in Nepal during the autumn season.
According to the Department of Tourism (DoT), the permits were issued to 71 teams comprising 485 men and 163 women. Department Information Officer Suraj Ghimire said the department has collected $1,571,659 (Rs 238,964,298) in royalties from the permits.
2,245 people obtain permits for mountain climbing during autumn
The climbers include 118 from China, 57 from Russia, 51 from France, 41 from the USA, 38 from the UK, 34 from Germany, 21 from Japan, 20 from Nepal, 19 from Poland, 18 from India, 17 from Australia, 16 from Canada, 16 from the Czech Republic, 15 from Spain, 13 from Switzerland, seven each from Belgium and Argentina, and five from Bulgaria, among others.
Mount Manaslu (8,163 meters) attracted the highest number of climbers, with 500 mountaineers from 43 teams obtaining permits.
Similarly, permits have been issued to 34 climbers from four teams for Dhaulagiri I, 20 climbers from two teams for Putha Hiunchuli, 16 climbers from two teams for Danga Hiunchuli and 10 climbers from one team for Baruntse Himal.
The DoT has also issued permits for Makalu, Gangapurna West (Langchenel), Thorong Peak, Norbu Khang, Annapurna IV, Chamlang, Lamjung Himal, Pumori, Saribung, Thapa Peak (Dhampus), Pokhar Khang, Ardang and Peri.
