KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Indra Bahadur Baniya, leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party (PP) in Bagmati Province, has urged Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama Tamang to resign and pave the way for new leadership.
Baniya, who was recently elected PP leader, spoke to journalists this morning (Friday) and appealed to CM Lama to abandon his stubbornness and facilitate a smooth transition.
Baniya elected President of NC Bagmati Province Committee
“Since he has lost the confidence of the parliamentary party, he should step aside on moral grounds,” Baniya said, clarifying that there is no personal animosity between him and CM Lama.
In the election for the NC PP leader in Bagmati held on Wednesday, CM Lama lost to Baniya. Defending Lama, Baniya, who was also elected president of Bagmati Province, garnered 22 votes out of a total of 37 provincial members, while Lama received only 14 votes. One vote was invalid.
Meanwhile, Tamang has been facing widespread criticism for not stepping down as the CM even after the defeat.
