CHITWAN, June 21: The first national general convention of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is set to begin in Chitwan on Saturday, with intense competition expected for the party’s vice-president positions.
The convention is preparing to elect Rabi Lamichhane unopposed as party president and Dr. Swarnim Wagle as one of the vice-presidents. Senior leader and Prime Minister Balen Shah is also expected to retain his position unopposed, while contests are expected for the remaining leadership posts.
Under the party’s amended statute, RSP will have three vice-presidents, including one woman. With the position held by Finance Minister Dr. Wagle secured, competition will be held for one open vice-president post and one reserved for a woman.

Five ministers are reportedly in the race for the remaining vice-president positions. For the open category, Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal, and Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal have expressed their interest.
In the women’s category, Law Minister Sobita Gautam, Federal Affairs and General Administration Minister Pratibha Rawal, and Samiksha Banskota are competing for the position.
The RSP convention is scheduled to begin shortly, with party Chairman Lamichhane and senior leader Balen Shah set to jointly inaugurate the event. The convention will continue until June 23.
